Editor's Verdict: ScreenClick recently bought out its main rival, MovieStar.ie, and began a major redevelopment of its service. These developments should firmly establish it as Ireland's leading online DVD rental service, so we have moved it into pole position in our Irish DVD rental websites category. When it started out back in 2001, it was known as DVDrentals and was the first DVD rental site run by the Irish for the Irish. After establishing itself as a leading Irish DVD rental service, ScreenClick was bought out by the UK DVD rental supergiant LoveFilm. The buy out brought both experience and funds, so it's not surprising that ScreenClick ultimately established itself as Ireland's largest online DVD rental service. It began by powering several other DVD rental services, such as Eircom Movie Rentals (which now redirects straight to Screenclick) and the RTÉ MovieClub DVD rental service (which no longer exists). Then in January 2009 Screenclick surprised many people by taking over its hugely popular competitor, MovieStar.com (which had previously occupied pole position in our rankings). To make the transition as smooth as possible, existing MovieStar customers continued to pay the same subscription rates and were provided with a new password that enabled them to log into Screenclick.com. However, some MovieStar customers were disappointed by what they found when they logged into the ScreenClick website and they conveyed their feelings in online forums. Screenclick, to its credit, has vowed to take on board the feedback from die-hard MovieStar fans and to carry out major redevelopments to its service in 2009. Improvements to the design and functionality of the ScreenClick website are key issues that will be addressed, as these were top of the list for MovieStar fans. ScreenClick also promises to please its customers further by offering a range of additional benefits such as extended phone support, better levels of stock and improved turn-around times. Although not as slick as the old MovieStar website, the (pre-developed) ScreenClick.com website is simple yet comprehensive. It's easy to find out about their service and get on with the more serious business of building your rental list. The database is easy to browse, offering decent-length plot summaries and members' reviews with star ratings for most titles. Their "members who liked this also liked..." feature is also extremely useful. There is also a wealth of competitions, articles and offers available to members once they sign up. Not only do Screenclick offer a customer contact phone line in case of any queries, but the number is displayed up front rather than tucked away behind several hyperlinks - a clear sign they're proud of their customer service. Before their acquisition of MovieStar, Screenclick's coverage of movies was generally excellent, but when it came to TV shows, we felt that their range was not quite as good as that offered by MovieStar. Presumably, after acquiring MovieStar's extensive catalog and completing the ScreenClick website redevelopment, most people (including former MovieStar fans) should be very satisfied with the range of choice and functionality offered by ScreenClick. Screenclick offer a simple choice of five packages, most including unlimited monthly rentals, the only restriction being on how many DVDs you are allowed to have out at any one time. They are ranked from Platinum, which allows you to rent 4 DVDs at a time to Bronze, who allows you to rent 1 DVD, with an additional "Screenclick lite" option if you only want to see 2 DVDs each month. The value for money on offer is very completive (especially as ScreenClick now run most of the DVD rental sites in Ireland!). The basic service works pretty much like many of the other DVD rental sites listed in this category. First of all you create a list of DVDs you want, ranking them in order of priority. However many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are then sent to you by mail. When you're done watching them you just pop them in the pre-paid return envelope. Upon receipt, Screenclick will post you the next batch of DVDs from your list unless your subscription has a monthly limit to the number of DVDs you can rent and you've just reached it. Delivery either way should take between 2 and 5 days, depending on where you live and whether any of those days are a weekend. All-in-all Screenclick offer a highly professional, competitive, and accessible service that is right up there with the top online rental providers in Ireland (most of which they either own or run anyway).
