Editor's Verdict:

As a public service broadcasting institution RTÉ is an obvious choice for many who may be distrustful of that whole internet thing and prefer to sign up to a DVD rental website that carries a name they can trust. On that count RTÉ doesn't disappoint: their service is easy to use, offers highly competitive value and is supported by a well-organised, clearly laid out website with a good search engine and a decent rental queuing system. Except of course its not actually run by RTÉ at all, the online DVD rental side of their business is farmed out to Screenclick, the longest-established DVD rental site in Ireland. In terms of service, RTE Movieclub seems to be a clone of Screenclick and as such we suggest you cut out the middle man and go straight to Screenclick, or even, Moviestar. However, if you'd prefer to stick with RTÉ, here's how it pans out.

The range of titles RTÉ offer is very good indeed, though more so when it comes to films (the TV box set selection is a little lacking in one or two respects). RTÉ claims to have the largest selection of DVD titles in Ireland but never quite gets around to telling you how many this is - suffice it to say it's probably enough for most tastes, at least when it comes to movies. Their customer service is also generally well spoken-of.

There are five plans to choose from, which is probably about the right number as this provides something to suit most appetites but not a bewildering amount of choice, each option representing rather good value for money. The four main plans are themed after metals, from bronze, which is the cheapest and entitles you to 1 DVD at time for €12.99 per month (no monthly limit), to platinum, which allows you to have 4 out at a time for €31.99 per month (again, no monthly limit). If you want to have more than 4 out at a time you're stuck until someone discovers a metal more valuable than platinum. There is also a "lite" use package, allowing you to take out 2 DVDs per month for €7.99, which sadly doesn't have a metal assigned to it (maybe "tin" or "copper" would be about right).

The basic service works pretty much like many of the other DVD rental sites listed in this category. First of all you create a list of DVDs you want, ranking them in order of priority. However many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are then sent to you by mail. When you're done watching them you just pop them in the pre-paid return envelope. Upon receipt, RTE will post you the next batch of DVDs from your list unless your subscription has a monthly limit to the number of DVDs you can rent. Delivery either way should take between 2 and 5 days, depending on where you live and whether any of those days are a weekend. Note that its not always possible to send DVDs in the exact order you have ranked them, popular titles may sometimes take longer to reach you and you may find yourself receiving titles from further down your list instead, but this is normal for any queue-based DVD rental system.

All in all, there is very little to differentiate RTÉ Movie club from Screenclick other than the names: its very much 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. Not that this matters: whichever you choose you're unlikely to be disappointed by the range, value or service on offer. Having said that, we feel that our number one pick, Moviestar has the edge over both of them, but why not try one out for yourself and make up your own mind.
