Editor's Verdict: If you haven't heard of Moviestar yet, then either you've been living on a remote island or you soon will be hearing about it. Moviestar.ie is only a couple of years old, and yet it's already hugely popular, has tens of thousands of members and bagged the Eircom Golden Spider award for the best new website in Ireland in 2006. The homepage is nicely decked out in various shades of blue - a simple design but it works suprisingly well and is quite soothing to the eye. Everything you need is also easy to find. The search engine for finding DVDs for your list is top notch, as is the information it gives you about each film, which includes decent reviews, customer comments, ratings and even trailers you can watch online. This helps you decide whether you wish to add them to your list, which is really easy to use and flexible too. You can access your list from anywhere in the world via your own homepage or even freeze your account for up to 60 days if you're off on vacation, so you won't have to pay for any movies while you're unable to watch any. These little, thoughtful touches often make all the difference between a perfectly adequate DVD rental operator and a truly exceptional one. As well as the useful stuff the website also incorporates numerous fun features, like interactive online games and lots of highly browsable movie lists and charts, that make the experience of visiting and updating your list even more fun. The actual coverage in terms of titles, both movies and TV series, is great - just try to catch them out - and now extends into blu-ray too. Downloadable movies will also be added to their range of services in the near future. This is typical of Moviestar, who are always looking for new ways to innovate in order to improve their service - clearly they are serious about being the best in the business. In terms of genre too there is a vast amount of choice here: everything from bombastic blockusters to celluloid classics, cult curios, foreign fare and anime anarchy. Its all here, and surprisingly easy to alliterate too. As Ireland's best-stocked online rental operator Moviestar not only offer a greater range of titles but also buy in more copies of popular movies than smaller companies, meaning there will be more copies to go around and you won't have to wait as long to wrap your eyeballs around them. Moviestar offer a choice of four packages, so there should be something to suit every appetite, and the value for money on offer is pretty much the best you'll find in Ireland. A good indication of how much an online rental company values its customers is whether they offer a customer service phone line rather than just a (much cheaper) email address. Moviestar does, so if you have any queries about the package you've chosen you can call them up and talk to a live human being rather than stare forlornly at your inbox for the next week hoping someone will get back to you. In fact, in its short life so far, Moviestar has already gained a reputation for great customer service, an area which can often be problematic with online DVD rental operators. The basic service works pretty much like many of the other DVD rental sites listed in this category. First of all you create a list of DVDs you want, ranking them in order of priority. However many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are then sent to you by mail. When you're done watching them you just pop them in the pre-paid return envelope. Upon receipt, Moviestar will post you the next batch of DVDs from your list unless your subscription has a monthly limit to the number of DVDs you can rent and you've just reached it. Delivery either way should take between 2 and 5 days, depending on where you live and whether any of those days are a weekend. Sometimes you won't always get the DVDs on your list in the order you've prioritized them, as more popular DVDs won't always be available and you may find yourself receiving titles from further down your list instead, but this is normal with online DVD rental services and not something you can really avoid by shopping around. In short, Moviestar is our, as well as Ireland's, number one choice for online DVD rental and is clearly a force to be reckoned with. It offers:
There are many reasons to sign up with Moviestar and, unless you think movies are a tool of evil and an enticement to sinfulness, no reasons we can think of not to.
